What is custom eLearning development?
Custom eLearning development is designing and building an online course from scratch around your learners, your content and your goals, instead of licensing a generic course from a library. It covers the learning plan, the lessons, the media, the quizzes and interactions, and the packaging that lets your learning management system (LMS) track every learner.
You'll also see it called custom eLearning content development, learning content development or custom course development. It's the same work: a course made for one organization's people.
Motifmotion is an animation studio that builds the whole course: instructional design, animation and video, knowledge checks and game-style activities, delivered as a SCORM package for your LMS. Most projects are workforce training: onboarding, compliance, product and skills courses.
Custom vs off-the-shelf eLearning solutions
There are three ways to get a course in front of your learners. Off-the-shelf courses are the fastest and cost the least. Custom eLearning takes more time and budget, and it's the one built around how your organization actually works.
Off-the-shelf courses
A library course, ready today. It works for broad topics such as general compliance or common software, where every company needs roughly the same content. Your people learn the general version, not your policies, products or systems.
Customized library courses
A library course with your logo, colors and a few edited screens. It's quicker than building from scratch, but the structure, examples and scenarios are still written for someone else.
Custom eLearning
Built from your content, your processes and the situations your learners actually face. Every example, scenario and quiz question comes from your work, so the course feels like your organization, not a template.
Our custom eLearning development process
Motifmotion's eLearning development services run in four stages. You review and approve each stage, starting with the storyboards, before the next one starts.
1. Plan
Instructional design comes first. Motifmotion works with your subject-matter experts to set learning objectives, outline the modules and write the scripts, then draws storyboards so you see every screen before it's built. This is where custom eLearning design decisions get made: what to teach, in what order, and what learners should be able to do at the end.
Instructional design2. Create
The course gets built: lessons, animation and video, interactions such as branching scenarios and clickable walkthroughs, quizzes, knowledge checks and game-style activities. Existing material, from slide decks to classroom courses, can be the starting point. On large programs, AI speeds up first drafts, and people make every design decision.
3. Deliver
Most courses are packaged as SCORM for your LMS. When a course needs to live outside an LMS, it can be built as a hosted learning site. Either way, you get completion, scores and progress for every learner.
4. Support
After launch, Motifmotion updates courses when your content, policies or products change, and can adapt a finished course into other languages.

Two ways to build: Storyline and Rise, or custom HTML5
The instructional design is the same either way. What changes is the tool the course is built in, and what you receive at the end.
Articulate Storyline or Rise
Storyline and Rise are the authoring tools most L&D teams already know. Motifmotion builds your course in them and hands over the project files, so your own team, or any other developer, can edit it later. A good fit for large course libraries, content that changes often, and RFPs that name the tool.
Custom HTML5
For courses no template can produce: interactions designed for your content, animation running through the lessons, and a look and user experience made for your brand. The finished course is packaged as SCORM for your LMS.
Most eLearning projects need more than a video. We produce the video and build the interactivity around it (knowledge checks, branching scenarios, clickable walkthroughs), then package the finished module as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, or xAPI so your LMS can track completion, quiz scores, and learner progress.
A video on its own, wrapped as SCORM, only tells your LMS that it was played. Scores and progress come from the interactions built around it.
Animation and video built into the course
Motifmotion is an animation studio, and that's what it brings to eLearning. Instead of stock images or a separate video vendor at the end, the animation and video are planned with the course: which ideas need to move, which need a character or a presenter, and which work better as text and a question.
Characters, scenes and graphics are built once as a library and reused in every module, so a long course stays consistent and a policy change means editing one scene, not starting over. When a project needs video for someone else's course rather than a full course build, see video production for eLearning.
Three ways to scope a custom eLearning project
Custom eLearning courses come in three levels, from video-led lessons to fully custom course development. Many organizations use more than one across different programs. Localization and ongoing updates can be added to any of them.
Video training program
Custom videos with scripts, a clear instructional structure and knowledge checks between lessons. The right level when video carries most of the teaching.
Interactive course
Everything in the first level, built as a Storyline or Rise course with assessments, resources and interactions, and the editable project files handed over. The right level for most large programs and RFPs.
Custom learning experience
Instructional design plus a custom HTML5 course, with interactions and animation designed for your content throughout, packaged as SCORM for your LMS.
Corporate eLearning solutions and who we build for
Motifmotion builds courses for corporate teams, higher education and nonprofits: onboarding, compliance, product, safety and skills training. Custom corporate eLearning development usually starts from material that already exists, such as policies, manuals, slide decks or a classroom course, and turns it into custom training content people can complete on their own time and your LMS can track. When a program is mostly video, see Corporate Training Video Production.
Healthcare training and education
Healthcare organizations use custom eLearning for staff onboarding, compliance and clinical skills, with scripts checked by your clinical lead. For staff and clinical training, see Medical Training & Education Videos. For material written for patients, see Patient Education Videos.

Custom eLearning development FAQs
Custom eLearning development is designing and building an online course from scratch for one organization: its learners, content and goals. It covers instructional design, lessons, media, quizzes and interactions, and packaging the course so your LMS can track completion and scores.
Custom eLearning solutions are online courses built around your own policies, products and processes instead of a generic library. They can be self-paced courses, short microlearning modules, scenario-based practice or video-led lessons, built in Articulate Storyline, Rise or custom HTML5.
It depends on four things: how long the course runs, how interactive it is, how much animation and video it needs, and whether it's built in Storyline or Rise or as custom HTML5. Motifmotion quotes each course after a first conversation about scope.
The timeline depends on course length, how interactive it is, how much content your experts already have, and how many review rounds your team needs. Motifmotion sets the schedule with you during planning, with named review points at each stage.
An eLearning developer turns an instructional design into a working course: building screens, interactions, quizzes and media in an authoring tool or in code, then packaging it for an LMS. Motifmotion covers design and development in one project.
Keep it in-house when your team has the authoring skills and the time for the volume. eLearning outsourcing makes sense for large programs, tight deadlines, or courses that need animation, video or custom interactions your team doesn't produce.
Yes. Slide decks, manuals, PDFs and classroom courses are common starting points. Motifmotion reworks them into objectives, lessons and interactions rather than copying slides onto screens, so the result works as custom training content, and your experts review it.
Courses are packaged as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 or xAPI, the standards most learning management systems accept, so your LMS can track completion, quiz scores and learner progress. Motifmotion confirms which format your LMS needs during planning.
Yes. Motifmotion updates courses when content, policies or products change. Storyline and Rise courses also come with the project files, so your own team can make edits too.
